Carol Beth Litkouhi (formerly Carol Beth Steiner) received her Bachelors of Music in Instrumental Education and Flute Performance from Hope College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her primary flute teachers were Julie Sooy and Rebecca Van de Walker. Previously, she studied flute with Ervin Monroe, principal flutist of the Detroit Symphony, and her mother, Jill Steiner. She has also performed at the National Flute Convention and participated in master classes with Ervin Monroe, Sharon Sparrow, and Jeffrey Zook of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
While at Hope College, Carol Beth won numerous honors and awards, including winner of the Concerto/Aria competition and Distinguished Artist Award. She actively performed as principal flute and section leader of the Hope College Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Symphonette. Also in college, she was chosen to become a member of the Intercollegiate Honors band. During her summers, she served as flute instructor for summer band camps and flute seminars, directing flute sectionals and assisting in marching training.
Carol Beth loves teaching a variety of ages and ability levels. In the classroom, she has planned, organized, and directed full-band rehearsals to middle and high school students. Recently, she served as an elementary music teacher, which included designing and implementing a curriculum with instruction in singing, playing instruments (including piano and recorder), music literacy, music history, beat and movement activities, cultural song games, improvisation, and basic composition. Additionally, she has experience in math and reading remediation, and is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University.
Professionally, Carol Beth is a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, the National Association of Music Educators, and Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society. She actively seeks new teaching approaches, ideas, and resources at professional workshops, and she regularly participates in the Michigan Music Educator’s Professional Conference. Carol Beth loves to perform with ensembles and as a soloist. She is a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Flute Choir and she also performs for weddings and events.
